Robot City

Today's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review provides a good example of what could result from creating a research park at the former LTV Coke Works site. The story, titled "CMU Plans Robot City," describes the need and opportunity to use the site for developing and testing prototypes of robots to do a variety of tasks.

The "Red Team," Carnegie Mellon's group which had the second- and third-place vehicles in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge race across the Mohave Desert, has already been using the site to test robots.

The group is moving to the former railroad roundhouse at the site because the building they currently occupy at Carnegie Mellon is being demolished to accommodate the new Gates Center for Computer Science.
